The Challenge
Visual artists spend weeks, months, sometimes even years creating a single work of original art. Once their art work is sold, artists have limited options in terms of continuing to benefit from their work.
The Solution
Fine art digital printmaking offers contemporary visual artists a wide variety of options for creating original and derivative works based on their paintings, collages, photographs, and low-relief dimensional objects in order to extend the benefits of their art. At Printmakers Chicago, artists work with the guidance of master digital printmakers, highly skilled in the complexity of contemporary fine art printmaking techniques.
Just as in traditional printmaking studios, sometimes called lithography or etching ateliers, Printmakers Chicago sees both surface and color as to the utmost importance in digital printmaking; traditional printmaking papers have been modified to receive the archival pigmented inks from large-format digital papers. Printmakers regularly stocks papers from the 500-year-old German Hahnemühle Paper Mill, as well as premium canvas and ecological substrates, such as Bamboo paper. Artists working in a wide variety of media recognize and respond to the special technical knowledge provided by master digital printmakers at this contemporary digital atelier.
Artists Speak Out
"Printmakers Chicago has offered me a number of truly innovative options for printing my monoprints," says Chicago artist Cheri Van Duyne. "I come from a traditional printmaking background and so I am very particular about creating fine art prints that meet my standards in terms of both longevity and surface texture. Some of the colors in my original works are difficult to capture in digital form, but through a rigorous proof-making process, this fine art printmaking studio has become quite adept at making my vision a reality in print."
Internationally established artist Ann Martin says, "When I am not working out of my studio in Ireland, Chicago is my site of choice mainly because of John Cisco and Printmakers Chicago. The verity of my prints is important enough that I bring my work to this master printmaker, knowing that the necessary time and attention to detail will give me what I want."
Painter and pastel artist Kathleen Newman agrees that digital printmaking creates a contemporary link to the craftsmanship of traditional printmaking studios. "Printmakers Chicago helps me make fine art digital prints in a similar way as etching or lithography ateliers helped artists of the past. In addition, I can document my work with museum-quality scans, proof the images and then conveniently make fine art prints when my schedule permits."
